Banksy: We Do Not Support Your Anti-Zionist and Anti-Semitic Art

An open letter to all art enthusiasts, collectors, producers and consumers alike:

British graffiti artist Banksy recently posted his latest art piece on Instagram – a poster that he first circulated at the World Travel Market convention in London (WTM London), which reads: “Visit historic Palestine: The Israeli army liked it so much they never left!”.

Banksy’s vehement campaign to delegitimize the state of Israel has been apparent to the art community for several years; installations like the Walled Off Hotel near the center of Bethlehem and the many graffiti pieces adorning the wall sectioning off the West Bank incite violence and call young Palestinians to antagonize the Israeli Defense Forces (IDF). Banksy, as well as other high-profile artists, continue to undermine Israeli sovereignty by claiming that the state itself is an unjust military occupation on the historic land of Palestinians.

These comments are completely anti-Zionist and anti-Semitic. Asserting that Jews have no right to a Jewish homeland in the Land of Israel is completely racist and cannot be tolerated from anybody, and especially not from such a well-known artist as Banksy who may propagandize this complex issue to his large following of art lovers on the topic. This type of art demonizes and ostracizes Jews and Israelis, adding hateful discourse that can lead to violent acts of anti-Semitism around the world.

The art community cannot sit idle while artists, and others, normalize anti-Zionism and anti-Semitism. We must reject art that promotes hatred, stifles conversation and prevents collaboration between hostile parties.

We will not support racism, anti-Semitism or anti-Zionism - not from Banksy and not from any artist.
