My dearest Rock Bridge Band members,

As of Saturday, September 7th, the Drumline received some frightful news: the percussion break at the end of set 45 had been cut.

Now, I know that means nothing to all of you Wind players, but this break was the coolest, sickest, hottest, and most rhythmically interesting thing the Drumline has in this year’s show— And now you guys may never get to hear it.

The rhythm in question— A ninelet— is based off of the quarter note triplet. When we first saw that rhythm all the way back during band camp, we were astounded—amazed— starstruck— that we had such a cool part, and with the help of our Drum Techs ( Clayton Carter and Chris Fusco) we learned to play it, a whole month before we ever took Movement 3 onto the field.

The reason for its unfortunate appearance on the cutting room floor, is that it happens right after the band yells: “Off to Never Never Land”. Mr. Sullivan, our benign, wise, and [legendary] metaphor making band director, thinks there should be silence after that line. However, we know for a fact that Mr. Sullivan never heard what would’ve been the apex of our Drumline’s technical mastery, and the count structure is such that our break would be the PERFECT way to end the percussion feature, and propel the band into a magnificent 4th movement.

I truly do believe that this break, a mere 2 measures of music, could take this show to the next level. Please Mr. Sullivan, out of the Million Dreams that I have, fulfill just this one on the behalf of the Drumline and reinstate our beloved ninelet.
