Ban tobacco in India and save 1.35 million lives of every year
Tobacco use is a major risk factor for many chronic disease including lung disease, cancer. It is one of major causes of death and disease in India and accounts for nearly 1.35 million deaths every year. The number of deaths may increase year to year in India.
Tobacco use is one of the public health threats. It leads not only to loss of lives but also has heavy social economic costs. According to WHO the total cost attributed to tobacco use from all disease in India in the year 2017-18 for persons aged 35 years and above amounted to INR 177341 crore. It may increase year to year.
Health effects of secondhand smoke of infants and children –
Compared to children of non smokers, the children of parents who have higher rates of lung or airways infection such as bronchitis, bronchiolitis and pneumonia. Ashthama is more common among children of smokers.
