Growing up in Glasgow, religion has always been a part of my identity. I was raised in a Catholic family, surrounded by a community that celebrated tolerance and diversity. However, the city I love is often overshadowed by events that rekindle old divisions and perpetuate bigotry. One of these divisive events is the Orange Walk, which takes place annually across Glasgow.

For those unfamiliar, the Orange Walk is a series of parades held by members and supporters of the Orange Order, a protestant fraternal organization. While its proponents claim it celebrates their culture and heritage, for many residents, it symbolizes a history of hatred and violence against Catholics. I see it as a reminder of past atrocities, a celebration of times when religious intolerance led to unspeakable violence.

When these parades march through our city streets, they're not just a march; they are a display of division. To many citizens, especially those from Catholic backgrounds, this event is a painful annual reminder of sectarian violence. The animosity expressed at these parades is not limited to historical grievances. Today, it overlaps with xenophobia, kindled by emerging protest movements against migrants in Glasgow. Shockingly, much of this opposition seems to stem from the same circles that organize or participate in the Orange Walks.

Glasgow is a city that should stand for unity and acceptance. The growth of racism and bigotry, whether thinly veiled as cultural expression or clearly articulated in anti-immigration protests, is unacceptable in our diverse community. These parades do nothing but fuel tension and embolden those with discriminatory views. We cannot continue to allow such events to define our city's reputation.

That is why I am calling for an end to the Orange Walk in Glasgow. This is not merely an appeal against a historical parade but a plea for peace, unity, and equality. Banning these parades would be a step toward reducing sectarian tensions and promoting a more inclusive and harmonious society.

We need the support of city leaders and policymakers to prioritize the emotional and physical safety of all residents over controversial traditions.
