Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags at Orlando International Airport (MCO)

Ban Single-Use Plastic Bags at Orlando International Airport (MCO)
The Issue
Florida is one of the most ecologically diverse states in the U.S., but it's also one of the most plastic-polluted. Every year, airports like MCO contribute thousands of pounds of plastic waste, with plastic bags making up 12–15% of terminal waste, according to national airport waste audits (EPA, 2023). This waste often ends up in our rivers, oceans, and local ecosystems, directly impacting Florida’s tourism, wildlife, and long-term economic sustainability.
We are calling on the Greater Orlando Aviation Authority (GOAA) and major retailers at MCO to eliminate single-use plastic bags and transition to reusable or compostable alternatives by 2026.
This petition is backed by:
Green Guru Project Inc, a student-led environmental economics initiative
Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 12 and 13: Responsible Consumption and Climate Action
Successful models: San Francisco International Airport reduced plastic waste by 30% in 2 years after their 2020 plastic ban
We propose:
A phased ban on single-use plastic bags at airport shops, convenience stores, and dining outlets
Partnerships with retailers to introduce paper or reusable bag alternatives
Clear signage and education campaigns for travelers on sustainable practices
Sign this petition to support climate-smart airport operations and ensure Florida remains beautiful—for our economy, our wildlife, and future generations.
🔢 Supporting Data to Mention in the Petition:
Airports generate over 2 million tons of waste per year in the U.S. alone (EPA).
Plastic bags take 500+ years to decompose and are rarely recycled.
Orlando MCO had over 50 million passengers in 2023—even 0.1 plastic bags per person = 5 million plastic bags/year.
Florida’s tourism revenue is deeply tied to a clean natural environment.
