Why this petition matters

Started by Denise Jarrett

Recently, H.R.5309 and S. 3167 were bills introduced to the U.S. Congress by Sponsor: Sen. Cory Booker [D-NJ], and Rep. Cedric Richmond [D-LA2] to protect Natural Hairstyles for African-Americans against the denial of federal assistance, housing, education, and employment.

Why do we need your support? Because these bills are different than the state CROWN ACT bills solidifying protection on a Federal level.

  1. As recently as 2018, The United States Armed Forces had grooming policies that barred natural or protective hairstyles that servicewomen of African descent commonly wear and that described these hairstyles as ‘‘unkempt’’.

  2. Routinely, people of African descent are deprived of education and employment opportunities because they are adorned with natural or protective hairstyles in which hair is tightly coiled or tightly curled, or worn in locs, cornrows, twists, braids, Bantu knots, or Afros.

ENFORCEMENT will be in the same manner and jurisdiction, incorporated in Title II of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, and a violation treated as if it was a violation of this Act.
