Decision Maker Response

Luke Foley’s response

Apr 20, 2017 — The time is right to #BanTheBag.

Plastic pollution kills countless numbers of birds, fish and sea mammals.

In NSW, millions of lightweight plastic bags are littered each year.

Our state has more than 2,100 kilometres of coastline and tens of thousands of kilometres of waterways – wetlands, lagoons, creeks, rivers and lakes.

Lightweight plastic bags pollute all these ecosystems and put wildlife at risk. More than 70 per cent of the rubbish entering our oceans is plastic.

NSW Labor supports strong action to reduce the number of plastic bags. That’s why last year Labor introduced laws that would ban single-use plastic bags.

Labor’s proposal would bring NSW into line with the ACT, South Australia, Tasmania and the Northern Territory, which have all introduced restrictions on plastic bags, as well as numerous other countries around the world.

The details of our policy can be found here:

If elected at the next election, I will ban single-use plastic bags across the state of New South Wales.

In the meantime, I will continue to urge the current Premier to act on this important environmental issue.

Thank you for supporting strong action to protect our environment and beautiful animals.
