Rabbits are constantly sold in pet store and via backyard breeders, where very little owner education is provided. These rabbits are sold without being spayed / neutered, the cost of which can be very costly ($200+) and vets that accept rabbits as patients are hard to find. And then when a rabbit owner can no longer care for their pet, there are very few, if any, humane societies that will take in rabbits. Rabbit rescues are small operations ran by individuals and they are usually at capacity. This results in may rabbits being abandoned in the wild, which is typically a death sentence for most rabbits and causes over population of domesticated rabbits in the wild due to their rate of breeding.
