As per Google transparency report it is clear that banning and blocking objectionable content on the internet is not actually in the interest of national security or communal harmony but a way to block websites criticizing the Govt . Since the Govt can influence main-stream media & control what news can hit the headlines & what must be hidden, similarly ‘We the People’ control social-networking media & it’s our views that we express of the Govt , policies or anything for that matter & should be listened to whether anybody likes them or not.
Like Google said, “When content is legal and does not violate our policies, we will not remove it just because it is controversial, as we believe that people's differing views, so long as they are legal, should be respected and protected.”
Though Google and Facebook have told Indian courts that it is impossible for them to block offensive content that appears on their websites, the courts are pressurizing 22 social networking sites (Facebook India, Facebook, Google India Pvt Ltd, Google Orkut, Youtube, Blogspot, Microsoft India Pvt Ltd, Microsoft, Zombie Time, Exboii, Boardreader, IMC India, My Lot, Shyni Blog and Topix) with threats of blackout & legal action against them. There are 48 hours of video uploaded on YouTube every minute & 250 million tweets are generated per day. How is it possible to monitor all of this content?
“If you use blocks, which is very easy for people to say, you will inadvertently block other things as well.”
And all this comes after the assurance given by the Govt that there was ‘No question of Internet censorship.’ The government is committed to abiding by what is there according to the Constitution...which is freedom of speech and expression. We protect that with a lot of energy.”
The government should not interfere with the affairs of people on the internet unless of course it is in the interest of national security or communal harmony. There are various other methods of blocking ‘Objectionable Content’. For eg; When person ‘A’ posts a comment which is objectionable to person ‘B’ or a group ‘C’, then B & C can report A’s comment or block A completely. Censorship is not the solution.
The people who were appointed to protect the peoples’ rights are initiating actions against ‘We the People’. The High Court issued sanctions & legal actions against social-media websites. And how dare does Justice Suresh Kait say, “We will block you like China”. Then India must not be called a democracy.
Even the United Nations recently launched a social media campaign to celebrate it as the right of every individual.
So we are petitioning to the UN to intervene & to the governors of various Indian states to help protect our Right to Freedom of Speech. We believe that a Governor will always act in the best interest of the people & not succumb to pressure by any Govt (state or centre).
So I urge people to sign this petition & save our Freedom of Speech. Please also sign this petition on www.care2.com to help gather more support.
