When you go for carriage ride do you ever think about the horse? If you do, does it change your perspective on carriage rides? Or if the horse is ok? Accidents take place in cities all over the country involving carriages pulled by horses. Horses lives are just as valuable as humans so why are they used for commercial vehicles? Stress,  health,  and care are three big issues we need to address.

Horses that pull carriages experience major stress because of their working environment, which usually has lots of movement and noise.   Horses are easily spooked by moving objects and loud noises. The noises on the streets are so loud that if a horse were to hear them it could cause major injuries to the horse and the passengers. Noises are not for horses. They need to be in a proper environment. Most carriage horses pull weigh up to 2,000 pounds, and the sounds and characteristics of a city can easily spook a horse.  The weight of carriages is also stressful

The stress of the horse causes issues but it mostly affects the health of the horse. The working conditions make the health of the horse terrible. The pollution of the city can cause serious lung diseases which can lead to death. Long days can also cause cut frogs, sunburn, which can all be fatal. Also the older the horse gets the less its body can handle so being out for a long time so that can cause muscle strain which can cause big problems. Horse carriage tours are only forced to stop at extreme temperatures. Which can be up to 101 degrees. The health of a horse can be problematic when its job is to pull a carriage.

One of the biggest problems is how the owners care for the horses, horses that pull carriages don’t get the care required. The cities that use horse and carriages tours don’t have enough yardage to let the horse run free in a paddock. Also, carriage horses mostly get fed electrolytes. Horses need more than just electrolytes. The working requirement hours for the horse is up to 16 hrs a day with a 2 ½ hour break every 8 hours. After those hours there is not paddock to be turned out in. The biggest issue is that horses that have pulled carriages are left with permanent marks on their back from being slapped with the reigns. This is very painful for the horse. They are usually slapped on their withers which is their shoulders. Imagine the pain of that.

So when you go for carriage ride do you ever think about the horse? Maybe you should. Horses have lives that should be lived. Do you really want to stop their lives? Horses are animals that can’t be contained in a city let them be free, they are a free spirit
