Ban hazardous materials from passing through major cities by rail on their way to a final destination
The train derailment and explosions at Lac-Megantic wiped out the entire downtown core, killed or injured dozens, and spilled 100,000 litres of oil into the area waterways. While this tragedy was devastating it is nothing compared to what would happen if a similar event occurred in a major city like Montreal, Toronto or Vancouver. This is not the first train disaster nor will it be the last. So far none has occurred in a major population centre but it is irresponsible to rely on luck to protect us.
This petition does not ban all hazardous materials from being delivered to or picked up from major cities. It does ban the unnecessary transport of hazardous materials that are passing through on their way to a final destination.
