According to The Trevor Project, Conversion therapy can be defined as, "several dangerous and discredited practices aimed at changing an individual’s sexual orientation or gender identity." Although more and more states are putting an end to conversion therapy, these states are the minority. 30 out of the 50 states still allow conversion therapy to take place. Conversion therapy is a dangerous practice that is typically religously motivated. Those who are subject to it are at higher risk of addiction, overdose, PTSD, anxiety, homelessness, and even suicide. People claim that conversion therapy is to ‘aid’ or ‘fix’ people when instead there are multiple studies proving that conversion therapy does not work and creates an abundence of psychological damage. Electroshock therapy, psychological manipulation, and humiliation are just some of the tactics used against LGBTQ+ youth. Due to the controversy surrounding conversion therapy there are often other names that conversion therapy can be called. The psychological harm is worse than anything. The practices focus on tearing down the LGBT youth by making them hate themselves and inflicting both physical and emotional abuse. Being a part of the LGBTQ+ Community is NOT a mental health disorder. The United States of America is supposed to uphold the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Forcing minors and members of the LGBTQ+ community to endure conversion therapy is an infringment on those basic human rights set out in our Decleration of Independence. This matter cannot wait and action must be taken NOW!
