Jacqueline Reed started this petition to Mayor Jim Darling

The Carson & Barnes Circus is scheduled to be in McAllen, TX until February 9th, and will be traveling across the Rio Grande Valley until March 1st. They continue to lose business and lose public contracts due to their continued use and abuse of animals in their acts, like elephants and camels, and yet McAllen, TX still welcomes them back, further enabling their mistreatment of animals.

Carson & Barnes has been cited for over 100 violations by the federal Animal Welfare Act, including but not limited to, failing to provide animals with basic necessities, like veterinary care, shelter and clean water. There is video footage of the inadequate care facilities, and of trainers violently using bull hooks (resembling a fire poker) and electric prods. These circus animals spend 96% of their lives in chains and cages with inadequate care and physical torture, all for our entertainment.

Beyond the abuse of the animals, these animals have been known to endanger the public, not exactly "family-friendly" as advertised. Just last summer one of Carson and Barnes' elephants escaped from confines and was found wandering nearby neighborhoods, and in 2016 they had to pay a 16,000$ fine when three of their elephants ran amok creating substantial damage to the venue, and cars in the parking lot. Boycott their circus, and sign this petition to push Mayor Jim Darling of McAllen, TX to ban the continued support of Carson & Barnes

My name is Jacqueline Reed, and I have lived in Edinburg Tx since I was 6 months old. I do not have children of my own yet, but I do have baby cousins and friends with the cutest babies, and I cant imagine if they were at the circus or in the parking lot if one of these animals broke free, the thought of that possibility alone, of this circus endangering our community, is enough for me to boycott. They advertise their shows as family friendly, but they are not. I attended one of their shows as a child and was so excited to see an elephant up close for the first time, as any kid would be, and the entire experience was not entertaining for me, but instead incredibly disheartening. even with the lengths they go to hide the abuse, you can see the scars, you can see the dehydration, you can see their knees buckling as they’re forced to keep going, you can see the pain behind their eyes, even as a child I could tell this wasn’t right, and now as more and more information comes out, it is painfully obvious of the inhumanity of this circus's practices. there are circuses like the Vasquez Cirque that do not resort to animal abuse that are in our area at the same time as Carson & Barnes, so I think if there is a choice in where to go for entertainment, there is no need to continue to support Carson & Barnes, when other communities do not. Boycott their circus, and sign this petition to push Mayor Jim Darling of McAllen, TX to ban the continued support of Carson & Barnes
