We the undersigned call on all relevant global authorities, space agencies and academic groups to desist from attempts to contact extraterrestrial intelligence.

Regardless of the balance of pros vs cons for contact, the decision to do so has huge implications for all humanity. Such a decision should not be taken by niche academics or national space agencies - it must be the collective choice of the human species as decided democratically via international organs of governance. 

This petition calls for an international ban on contacting ETI until a decision framework has been established and implemented.

We believe in the real danger of dark forest phenomena, as well as the potential for even non-hostile alien interaction to greatly ablate the independent agency and civilisational development of our young species. It is requested that researchers and world leaders uphold the precautionary principle as it applies to broadcasting communications into the cosmos, and do not proceed with such projects without gaining the democratic support of humanity as a whole.
