With the push to online classes, the administration of the University of Tampa has deemed it acceptable/necessary to allow professors to utilize online proctoring services (i.e Proctorio, ProctorU, HonorLock, etc...) under the preconception that it will prevent cheaters from being able to exploit online exams. What the University of Tampa fails to acknowledge are the overt data privacy violations that these services inherently have to utilize to monitor you as a student. These test-taking services can operate in a spectrum of different ways, varying between the different vendors. What is a common theme, however, is the outright Orwellian application of data collection and lack of transparency. When these companies promise "safe and secure data collection practices" after installing their program, they are really monitoring your system processes for any task you perform on your personal computer, using a key/mouse logger for every input you use on your computer, using eye movement estimation, audio monitoring, head movement detection, full room scanning, peripheral detection (secondary monitor detection, USB drives, etc...), network traffic monitoring for your browser activity and history, and even more invasive measures. Yet there is no audit, transparency, or goodwill exhibited by these companies to demonstrate that our data isn't just being uploaded to a data harvesting server for them to manipulate and sell to 3rd-party vendors. UT should not be outsourcing our privacy so that their professors have their jobs a little easier. For those of us with test-anxiety, knowing someone or some program is watching and analyzing our every movement is a terrifying/debilitating reality that should not be enforced, lest we be called a cheater by the administration. Sign this petition to remove the use of these Big Brother programs, and move to a less invasive and UT-centric delivery method of joining a Zoom class and having a professor proctor the tests themselves.
