Save Robert E. Lee Park

Baltimore County Executive Kevin Kamenetz has requested that Baltimore City rename Robert E. Lee Park, which the County manages under a long term licensing agreement with Baltimore City. The timing of this formal request follows the tragic event of June 18 in Charleston, South Carolina
Robert E. Lee Park was the gift of Mrs. Elizabeth B. Garrett-White, who provided a sizable monetary bequest in her will to honor the memory of General Lee. The Baltimore City Circuit Court reviewed the terms of her will in the 1940's and agreed that the establishment of a park named in memory of Robert E. Lee would honor her wishes. Now seventy years later, Baltimore County Executive Kamenetz and City Council President Jack Young wish to oppose the stated wishes of Mrs. Garrett-White and the opinion of the Circuit Court
The current attempt to rename the park clearly violates the stated wishes of the donor to honor the memory of Robert E. Lee. We must let our elected officials know that such action is unconscionable and clearly unacceptable.
