We don’t want a liquor store next to a daycare center in Westgate Community

The Westgate community straddles the southwest Baltimore City and County line. It’s a lovely family-friendly neighborhood of bungalows, Dutch colonials and other early 20th century houses nestled among an old growth canopy of elms, oaks, and flowering fruit trees. As with any “borderland” our neighborhood has its share of challenges. But we’re a tight knit community that looks out for one another. Residents often tell stories about impromptu potluck dinners with neighbors, and the Halloween trick-r-treating on Mallow Hill is legendary.

We have one small strip of businesses in Westgate along Edmondson Avenue where it intersects with North Bend Road. Westway Liquors and the attached Iampieri’s Bar have been in the neighborhood since the 1950s and have been good neighbors to the community. On the corner of Edmondson and North Bend, Rise N Stars Daycare Center provides childcare for many local families.

It’s true that the community has been eager to see the two vacant storefronts on Edmondson Avenue filled. They have sat empty for years. The community association has encouraged County government officials to help find suitable tenants.

However, the Westgate community was shocked to learn that a liquor license has been requested for one of the empty storefronts.

We don’t want or need another liquor store in our community. And we definitely don’t want to see one established right next door to a thriving daycare center.

We demand that you not approve this liquor license for Edmondson Wine and Spirits, LLC in the 5500 block of Edmondson Ave., Baltimore, MD 21229.
