Rewrite school dress codes for Baltimore City Public Schools
We simply want to be able to go back to school without having our teachers send us to the office because we accidentally forgot our cardigan to cover up our shoulder-revealing spaghetti straps.
We want to be able to go back to school wearing skirts if we please because our skinny-legged girl khakis are claustrophobic.
We want to be able to go back to school without being scolded for either having a bra strap showing or no bra at all.
We can't win because we aren't supposed to. The system has been created to defeat us every time. That's why we have to fix the system.
Under the Code of Conduct, "Uniforms and dress code", section of the Baltimore City Public Schools website, it states, "Shorts and skirts may not be shorter than fingertip length. Halter tops, tank tops, spaghetti straps, muscle shirts, or see-through tops are not allowed... Clothing should be worn so that undergarments, including boxer shorts, thongs, or bras, are not exposed."
This statement in the Code of Conduct needs to be modified for inclusivity. Many fail to recognize the issue, but the code targets girls of all ages in school. We need to be altering the rules to make it so that everyone in school can dress appropriately and comfortably without feeling like the source of a distraction. Please sign if you agree to knocking down the gender divide in our local schools.
