bspa soccer started this petition to Ballston Spa Board of Education and Superintentent Ken Slentz

On Monday 9/14/2020 the Ballston Spa Board of Education and Superintendent Ken Slentz made the decision to not allow medium risk sports, specifically soccer to participate in the 2020 Fall Season with the rest of the Suburban Council schools. The Suburban Council should make their decisions by looking toward government administration including the approval from the New York State Governor, Andrew Cuomo, who has been extremely vigilant to make sure that his recommendations coincide with the recommendations and data provided to him by the Nations top doctors from the CDC and other statewide and national public health organizations. The districts were left to make their own decision after the Governor, NYSPHSAA  section 2 and suburban council deemed that medium risk sports (including soccer) were safe. Ballston Spa Board of Education chose specifically not to allow a soccer season. Ballston Spa came to that conclusion for largely unspecified reasons and because of their concerns with spectators not abiding by state regulations. Everyone participating in practice and games will be wearing a mask until off school primes and can social distance easily on the sidelines. The Board of Education stated their concerns with restrooms becoming locker rooms. However soccer teams do not use locker rooms because they arrive fully dressed and ready for their game, this will allow the school to limit the number of people in the bathrooms at a time. With a solution being limiting entrance points and receiving the contact information of the spectators. Along with limiting the number of spectators, social distancing and masks will be enforced as well as having two separate locations for the home and away team spectators to watch. Or have no spectators at all and instead Livestream games like we do board meetings. With no means to reschedule the season, this leaves the student-athletes watching most of the schools in the region play. Noting having soccer is potentially exposing the kids to more risks as the students decide to play club soccer. School soccer is only four counties whereas club teams play across the state. We are asking the district to reevaluate and give the student-athletes at least a chance to join our peers in this upcoming season. We are willing to strictly follow all state guidelines as well as any additional rules that the district chooses to enforce, including delaying the start of soccer practices for another week for a total of 14 days to the maximum incubation period. An extra week helps us keep a pulse on the status of the other schools in the Suburban Council and make necessary changes before we make contact outside of the district. To the Ballston Spa Board of Education and Ken Slentz, we respectively hope that you will listen to the voices of the public and understand that we are capable of safely representing Ballston Spa in the 2020 soccer season. To those signing, we greatly appreciate your support.

Respectfully,

The Student-Athletes at Ballston Spa High School.
