Bridge mall redevelopment plan spells disaster for Ballarat

The Ballarat City Council is trying to push through – quickly and quietly – a plan to 1} re-open the Bridge Mall as a thoroughfare for cars creating a “rat run”, and 2} demolish the surrounding buildings including Big W, the Coles & Woolworth car parks, JB Hi-Fi, the car wash, the senior citizens premises, the Cheap As Chips block in order to make room for a development of 750 apartments including low cost housing.

The social implications of this plan would devastate the city centre; many people believe the sheer number and concentration of low cost housing would create a ghetto, a drug and crime haven.

The parking nightmare for the thousands of residents , shop staff and shoppers not catered for in the plan and the local businesses that will  be financially ruined during and after the construction are all factors that the council have not considered.

Please take the time to sign this petition to let council know that this is not what you – the community – want the Bridge Mall and Bakery Hill precincts to become.

The Bridge Mall is a large community space unique in Ballarat, perfect for community events and festivals, yet council never runs any sort of events in it. The $15 million allocated to the area should be used to beautify this historic area and promote its functional space for the benefit of the community.

One of the main reasons the Bridge Mall became a pedestrian mall in 1981 was the number of fatalities caused by the vehicular traffic going through at the time. Many elderly citizens and young families have expressed their concerns about using the mall and Bakery Hill if these plans go ahead.

The council’s response to these objections is that they “want to change the demographic of the area anyway”. I am sure you are as appalled as I am by such disrespect and callousness.

I am asking you to honour our past and secure our future. Tell the council to abandon this plan and come up with something better that takes into account your opinion.
