Alice McFadden started this petition to Ball Chatham school district

Currently at the Ball Chatham School District, students are enraged by the  sudden enforcement this year of the school's dress code. Young girls are being taught to hide their bodies for the comfort of others, which can ultimately lead to body image issues to circulate through their growing minds. At Glenwood High School, the girls' ages can range from approximately 13-18 years old, so most female students are minors. We should not be sending the message that these young bodies are sexualized in any way by calling attention to the clothing they wear. We are told to cover our shoulders, chests, midriffs, etc. , but these are not inherently sexual body organs, as the dress code evidently assumes. The clothes we wear are not the issue, the issue lies with the reaction of others. It is said that we are "distracting" to others, just by wearing clothes that we feel comfortable in. We are not asking to be able to go to school wearing only a bra and underwear; we are just seeking to have a little more freedom in our choices of clothing. Personally, I have had friends pulled aside, or even out of class entirely, to discuss the dress code with an administrator.  This is wasting precious educational time for something that should not be pulling the attention of anyone, including administrators. I (as well as others) have not heard of any student complaints having about clothing options (for example, tank tops or crop tops) except in some cases of extremely political or sexually explicit graphics. We are therefore confused as to why this has been stated as a concern male students could become "distracted" by something as benign as an uncovered shoulder. In the student handbook, it is stated that Glenwood will provide a safe and welcoming environment for diversity and uniqueness for all students. Limitations on female students' clothing should not limit our ability to express ourselves through our clothing. Many teenagers are trying to find themselves throughout high school, and the way you dress can play into this a great deal. Students want to feel comfortable and confident in what they wear. It is also mentioned in the handbook that no student, regardless of gender, be limited in the exercise of any right, privilege, or advantage. If this is true, then  female students should be as free to come to school in a tank top as male students are to wear muscle tanks. Therefore, we respectfully request that the administration reconsider the enforcement of the GHS dress code to avoid unjust and unnecessary applications to normal teen wear.
