Styrofoam is harmful to all, and we at BCMS are contributing by using styrofoam lunch trays every single day. Our school, BCMS, serves 500 lunches per day, for 180 days per year, meaning that we use at least 90,000 styrofoam containers per year. 

One chemical in styrofoam, polystyrene, can easily leach into waterways, and manufacturing it creates hazardous waste, and it also is a great contributor to climate change. Additionally, styrofoam is toxic to both the health of animals and humans. Styrofoam is NOT biodegradable, and will stay in landfills for very possibly forever. 

We believe this is unacceptable and insist that our school find an alternative material to package our lunches. We understand that styrofoam is the cheapest material and that our food services budget is small, but the health and environmental costs of styrofoam definitely outweigh any monetary savings.

I support the effort to get rid of styrofoam in BCMS's cafeteria as soon as possible.
