The Institute of Gandhian Studies (Gandhi Vichar Parishad), Wardha is an educational and public charitable institution that has been set-up as one of the commemorative projects of the Jamnalal Bajaj Centenary Year on October 7, 1987. It was set up with the objective to promote, organize, sponsor, undertake the study of the life and thought of Mahatma Gandhi as well as other contemporary thinkers and social revolutionaries. It offers courses of study of different durations oriented towards the academic community including the Departments of Gandhian Studies in universities, thinkers, religious groups, activists, trade unionists, panchayat leaders, workers among unorganized labour, workers of voluntary/grass-root organisations, women, youth, students and similar other groups.

It is very unfortunate that the Bajaj Foundation has now decided to close the institute. More unfortunate is the fact that this decision is not taken for unavailability of finances. This petition is addressed to all those who feel connected to Gandhi and Gandhian thought and find some merit in its contemporary relevance.

Gandhi Vichar Parishad has its roots in the early fifties, when some close associates of Gandhi decided, shortly after his death, that there was a need for an Institution which would undertake the scientific study and analysis of Gandhian Thought and methods for the benefit of the younger generation. The founding members included such eminent Gandhian scholars such as Kaka Saheb Kalelkar, Shri J. C. Kumarappa, Shri K.G. Mashruwala, Shri Shankar Rao Deo, Shri G. Ramachandran, Shri S. N. Agarawal and Shri Satish Chandra Dasgupta.

An institute like IGS is amongst the very few left where one can live the Gandhian way of life and hence understands it even better. 1000s of students attend camp every then and now apart from those who do a full course at the institute. IGS is been imparting valuable education to students with full dedication, especially to students from underprivileged sections of the society.

We urge you to support this petition so that the Bajaj Foundation reconsider their decision of closing it realising the relevance it has in lives of many students and other stakeholders associated with Gandhian thought their responsibility in supporting the institute in various forms. This is a firm step to build this bond of collective responsibility between the foundation and the stakeholders of the IGS and keep alive the study of Gandhian thought. IGS is the heritage of Shri Jamnalal Bajaj Ji and his work. As his 150th birth anniversary is approaching, we urge the bajaj foundation to work in the direction of realizing dreams of Jamnalal Bajajji and Gandhiji.
