Halle Watt started this petition to Baie D'urfé and

Petition to the minister of the environment and the fight against climate change,

We, the undersigned residents of the city of Baie D’urfe call upon the Quebec Minister of the environment and the fight against climate change, Benoit Charette to ban the use of single-use plastics in local shops and grocery stores and require eco-friendly packaging options. Shoppers should be required to bring their own reusable totes/bags as an alternative.

Every time we go to the grocery store, shops, etc and we use a plastic bag we are contributing to waste and the release of greenhouse gases. The more GHG released into the atmosphere, the worse climate change will get. A recent report showed that plastic production contributes to planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions at every point in its life cycle (Lindwall, 2020). In order to reduce the amount of single-use plastic we consume; we can use alternative packaging. Materials such as brown paper bags which can be recycled, reusable bags that are easily cleaned, compostable bags, etc. are easy to obtain and use and don’t cause nearly as much harm to the environment as single plastic bags.

Let’s advocate for alternatives to single-use packaging at local grocery stores and shops. The sooner we make a change the closer we are to reduce the number of greenhouse gases released into the earth’s atmosphere. Please sign!
