Victory for Maryam!
Sep 18, 2014 — Thank you to all who participated in this petition.
After much pressure on the Bahraini government and many calls for her freedom, we are happy to announce that Maryam Al Khawaja was released from prison today! Although we are not yet aware of the details conditioning her release, we are very pleased with this outcome and are grateful to share this news with you. We are also overjoyed that Maryam was granted a visit to her father Abdulhadi Al Khawaja, who is still on hunger strike due to his impending arbitrary detention. The Al Khawaja family who were reunited once again for this visit after a long period of separation, share their appreciation for you. We welcome Maryam's release and thank you all for your contributions.
At the same time, while we are rejoiced by the release of Maryam, we remain concerned with the continued arbitrary detention of Abdulhadi, her father, whose detention was confirmed to be arbitrary by the UN Working Group on Arbitrary Detention. As a prisoner of conscience in Bahrain, we will continue to request his imminent release.
We hope that we can rely on you and your continued support for political prisoners in Bahrain. We urge you to always show zero tolerance for reprisals against human rights defenders like Maryam and Abdulhadi.
