Baccalieu View Walking Trail Shuttle Service

0 have signed. Let’s get to 500!

The Baccalieu View Walking Trail and Interpretation Centre is applying for funding from The Newfoundland and Labrador Community Transportation Program. This program is administered through The Department of Children, Seniors, and Social Development and overseen by The Hon. Lisa Dempster. This program provides not-for-profit organizations the opportunity to provide alternate transportation services. In this case the application is being made to avail of a grant for the purchase of a van. The Bay de Verde, Red Head Cove, Grates Cove and Old Perlican area are in vital need of a reliable and accessible shuttle service that would operate between the communities, but would also shuttle to larger centers such as Carbonear and St. John’s. The only hospital, drug store, grocery store, and other services are located in Old Perlican and many people in the area do not have access to these essential services. The shuttle service would also coordinate outings to larger centers and visit restaurants, entertainment venues and areas of interest (museums). Shuttle services would be available free of charge for seniors, persons with disabilities and mobility issues, and those who cannot afford to pay. The Shuttle service would be operated by a network of volunteers, several of whom have already expressed interest and offered their time. These volunteers would be vetted and bondable, not to mention friendly and aware of needs their passengers may have. The service would generate revenue by renting the vehicle (to certified groups and organizations), donations, partnerships, and shuttling from restaurants and bars. This would be how the shuttle service would keep up maintenance and operations. From time to time the Shuttle Service would hold community fundraising activities online and in person, whereby the community could give back by donations, in kind or by tangible items like gift cards. The shuttle service would be operated by the same organization that successfully operates the Baccalieu View Walking Trail and Interpretation Centre. Our group has extensive experience producing events and providing support for seniors in the community. From dances and dinners, to the creation of a walking trail that is accessible, this well organization considers community support and services a priority. The people of this area would greatly benefit from overcoming barriers to accessible, affordable and inclusive transportation. It would help our communities grow and thrive.

Supporting this initiative means supporting our rural communities.
