Get Gideon Adeyeni and others arrested during #EndSARS memorial protest freed
On Wednesday 20th October, 2021, Gideon Adeyeni was arrested around Lekki Tollgate in Lagos alongside 33 others as the police and other state agents attempt to repress a protest which had started in remembrance of those who were murdered while the government tried to repress the #EndSARS protest that took place in October 2020. They were subsequently arraigned in court and granted bail while the case was adjourned.
The statement issued by the police branded Gideon and the other arrested protesters "hoodlums," claiming that they had "criminal intentions to start attacking innocent, law-abiding citizens." (Read here: https://gazettengr.com/endsars-anniversary-thirty-four-hoodlums-arrested-police-say/). Nothing could be further from the truth. The police statement which reads that the arrested individuals 'stabbed a man in the stomach' shows the government's attempt to frame them up for serious crimes, the penalty for which could be months or years of jail time.
It is obvious that the arrest and prosecution of Gideon and the other folks is an exhibition of the Nigerian government's all too familiar dictatorial character which gives no room for protest nor permit the exercise of such democratic rights.
There are sufficient (video) evidence to show that the protesters had were their placards, banners and their singing and chanting voices.
Kindly join me in demanding that Gideon and other #EndSARS memorial protesters be freed. Protest is a democratic right. It should not be criminalized!
