AZA Vaquita SAFE: 1 million posts for vaquita conservation #post4aPorpoise
0 have signed. Let’s get to 2,500!
To save the vaquita porpoise from extinction, zoos and aquariums in the U.S. are launching a public, world-wide 1 Million Cards and Posts campaign. We aim to encourage Mexico's new President, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, to continue the country’s vaquita conservation initiatives and efforts.
The vaquita porpoise is the smallest and most endangered marine mammal in the world, with fewer than thirty individuals left. Vaquita are entangled in nets set for fish and shrimp. Today these nets are illegal however illegal fishing persists. Only found in Baja’s Upper Gulf of California, the vaquita is at the brink of extinction.
The 1 Million Cards campaign also aims to engage and empower Americans to support vaquita conservation efforts and continue to educate and inspire individuals about the plight many animals face around the world.
Zoos and aquariums around the country are encouraging their visitors and supporters to sign this petition online or a physical postcard onsite. Each institution will collect signed postcards which will be shared with the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. This online petition will also be shared.
The Vaquita SAFE program’s long-term goal is to create a sustainable seafood market sourced from the Upper Gulf of California, benefitting the local communities, the economy, the vaquita, and the other wildlife in the Upper Gulf.
