Stop The Use Of Plastic Cutlery, Packaging, Cups And Lids In The AY Jackson Cafeteria

AY Jackson is a wonderful school that is full of an openminded and aware community of staff and students. We are well aware of the impact that plastic pollution has on our oceans and their wildlife. Over 1 million marine animals (including mammals, fish, sharks, turtles, and birds) are killed each year due to plastic debris in the ocean! And it is a sad thing to think that our caf is contributing to this monstrosity!

Our school cafeteria is great. It provides us with those yummy goods like cookies and poutine. But we need to stop serving single-use plastics that will never biodegrade and will have irreversible effects on wildlife. It may seem as though what one high school does wouldn't matter, but every action counts. This small change of material can create a ripple effect among our fellow schools in the OCDSB and will have the power to go even further. Plus, if you look at it, all of that packaging really adds up.

This is a proposal to our school, AYJ, to stop using single-use plastic cutlery and resort to metal forks and spoons, package food in paper bags and use takeout boxes made of paper to serve food such as poutine inside of. We have already done a great deal by eliminating plastic straws, we can do this too. Power to the people!
