Aviation must declare all emissions released by flying in adverts and competitions
Why this petition matters
We call upon the government to legislate to ensure that what is detailed in aviation advertisements/ literature in the media, online, and on our airwaves gives a true account of what flying does to the planet, so that the consumer can make an informed decision about whether to fly or not to fly. This emissions figure should relate to an everyday activity so that the consumer can appreciate the colossal amount of harm that would be done to the planet by flying.
Like cigarette packaging and food allergen contents, aviation has a responsibility to the health of the planet (and us) to declare, clearly, in adverts, literature and competitions the emissions that will be released by flying.
The emissions figure for the flight should not be hidden in the Terms and Conditions (T&Cs) but be openly displayed, or voiced, within the advertisement/ literature.
Competitions enticing the consumer to win a holiday overseas should also declare the emissions released from winning such a holiday so informing the consumer whether to take part or not.
With aviation forecasting an increase in the demand for flying, flying promotions must provide the full facts to the consumer in all literature and adverts so they can make an informed decision as we all face the urgency of a climate crisis.
