AUSTRALIA CITIZENSHIP LAW CHANGE

Dear Mr Turnbull, Prime Minister of Australia,
We are a group of Chinese migrants who have already obtained permanent residency or have already filed paperwork and are at the waiting stage of being granted permanent residency. We therefore would be directly influenced by the new citizenship legislation and some other changes to the welfare policies, such the abolishment of CGS support for high education of PR students.
As new residents to Australia, most of us, after abandoning our careers and selling our properties back in our homeland, work very hard and try our best to integrate into the community in our new country, Australia. As part of the Australian society we strive to be the best we can be and fit into our new community. We embrace Australian values of justice, equality, mutual respect, and working hard. We are employed here, work very hard, pay tax here and make great effort to be good roles models.
However, suddenly and unfortunately, the door to our Australian citizenship which was promised by the previous immigration minister and former Prime Minister, which made us abandon our lives and family in China and move to Australia, is becoming not a dream but a nightmare. Some of us are middle age and even though we speak English, English is our second language and it would be very hard to get through English test of IELTS 6 scores.
For the Chinese immigrants that have already applied and put in their paperwork we think this is very harsh that the new laws should NOT apply to them. They have gone through everything they needed to and all the process that were in place prior to the change taking place from the 20th April 2017. Why should they be made to start the process again, or meet the new requirements when they are already in the system? We feel that this would be very detrimental to their whole process and their citizenship and set them back years in gaining what they are all after, Australian Citizenship/ Permanent Residency.
If they are new applications then the new laws should apply, but where is the fairness or Australian spirit for the ones that are already in the system that have spent money and time lodging their paperwork and starting the process months or years ago.
We appeal to you Mr Turnbull and also the immigration ministers to please reconsider the new citizenship law, or for the people that have already started the paperwork process still be covered under the old laws and not be made to start the process again.
