Litzman has to go!

The Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, must understand that Ya’acov Litzman remaining in the post of Deputy Health Minister – where he is effectively the Health Minister - is a slap in the face to the many Australians Zionists who support Israel through thick and thin.

For the sake of keeping good relations between our two countries and for the sake of justice, Litzman must go. We call on the Prime Minister to ignore Litzman’s appeal to be reappointed to the Health Ministry and sack him.

Jews in Australia are broadly supportive of Israel and are loathe to publicly criticise its government, but this case demands we speak out.

We believe Litzman has helped protect Malka Leifer from being extradited to Australia to face 74 charges of child sexual abuse against female students at the Adass Israel School in Melbourne.

The legal struggle to bring Leifer back to face justice in Australia has, so far, clocked up more than 50 court dates. The wheels of justice aren’t moving slowly, they appear to have been stopped. And we believe it’s Litzman who has applied the brakes.

He has already been questioned by police over allegations he attempted to obtain false medical papers to prevent Leifer’s extradition to Australia. And the Hamakor program on Israel’s Channel 13 has reported on the intervention by Litzman and his ministry on behalf of at least 10 convicted sex offenders. One of them, Rabbi Yaakov Yitzhak Rata, committed horrific sex crimes against a girl, starting when she was eight and ending when she turned 18. She courageously testified, and Rata received a 16-year prison sentence.

Before Rata was found guilty, Litzman said Rata had suffered an injustice and lobbied for longer parole for him. His efforts led to a rare clash between the ministry and the Israel Prison Service.

Litzman oversees a number of psychiatrists who are key witnesses in the Leifer case. Israeli journalist Raviv Drucker has asked, “Shouldn’t Litzman be barred from being able to influence witnesses”?

Yes, he should. The way to do that is to sack him, immediately.
