Queensland Premier Campbell Newman has announced he is ending the state's ban on uranium mining. Mr Newman says the decision to lift the ban was partially prompted by Prime Minister Julia Gillard's recent support for uranium sales to India.
In February the New South Wales Liberal State Government approved the resumption of exploration for uranium, a move which has paved the way for a full resumption of mining. Mining is currently banned in Victoria but allowed in South Australia, the Northern Territory and Western Australia.
Uranium mining and the production of fuel for nuclear power is extremely toxic at all points of the supply chain. There are currently no adequate solutions for disposing or storing it safely for the many thousands of years necessary. Poisoning of the water table and surrounding waterways is an inevitable consequence. There are many other viable/renewable energy alternatives capable of delivering clean power.
