Family Violence and Family Law

Family violence is behavior by a person towards family members of that person which can be physically, sexually, emotionally or economically abusive. It can also be threatening or controlling the family member that makes them fear for their safety or safety of others in the family. People who have been exposed to violence have a greater risk of developing medical conditions such as depression, anxiety and PTSD. Under Australian Family Law, children have a right to have a meaningful and safe relationship with their parents and to be protected from harm. Shared parenting where there is high conflict such as family violence is not good for children. The family law act protects the children and what is in their best interest when there is a parenting order in place. Sadly, some judges don’t realize the full impact family violence can have on children and give the abusive parent access to the children. These children may have been witness to or abused by that parent and this will create more psychological harm. By the judge letting the abusing parent see the kids, this makes the children feel like their experience and view point of that parent is not taken seriously and dismissed. Please sign this petition to make judges realize that family violence is serious and that kids shouldn’t have to see that abusive parent if they don’t want to.
