Josh Herridge started this petition to Australian Government and

Recycling in Australia

The aim of the petition is to make Australia recycle more by implementing recycling facilities and making the government put laws in this so it is not such an environmentally harmful process. Below is more about the ways we can do this and a more descriptive version of what's written above.

Australia produces over 50 million tonnes of waste per year that is over 2 tonnes per person! Most of this we think is going to be recycled or at least not dumped in landfill because that’s what the recycling bin tells us, unfortunately this is far from reality and only a small part of what we put in our recycling bins is actually recycled and the rest is put in landfill or shipped overseas to be burned or stockpiled in landfills. Of course, there are better ways to do this but Australia isn’t doing them and that is why I am making this petition so we can change. Here are 4 ways that Australia could recycle more and make use from all of their plastic pollution.

1.     Singapore burns their rubbish to generate energy while at the same time filtering the fumes so the air coming out of the facility is cleaner than the air in most cities. The leftover ash from burning the rubbish is transported to a lake in the centre of a manmade island on which there are trees growing, birds singing and wildlife flourishing.

2.     Cities in Sweden have a colour coded bagging system for rubbish so when it reaches the waste plant the machine can sort through it quickly and then move it off to its designated areas for recycling. The different bags are in 7 categories are Food, Textiles, Cartons, Newspapers, Plastic, Metal and Non-Recyclable.

3.     In places in Africa they are melting down plastic waste and remolding it into fishing boats and canoes. This is a simple way to use something in abundance and transform it into something a lot more meaningful for the community and more useable as well as cutting down the space needed for landfills.

4.     New villages in Mexico are being made out of recycled plastic and are solving a poverty issue. The houses take 7 days to assemble and costs as little as $280. Not only that but one house removes over 2 tonnes of plastic waste from landfill making this a triple win solution.

These solutions are so simple and effective, but the Australian government still won’t use any of these or lots more ways to reduce plastic waste. By signing this petition, we want to see Australia develop sustainable recycling facilities in Australia to reduce landfill and create products out of recycled material. I would also like to see no recycling to be shipped overseas and the recycling industry provide new jobs and industry for the Australian economy.

Thank you for taking the time to read this and I hope this petition can have an impact.
