Paul Kranenburg started this petition to Australian Government and

Australian citizens have the right to return to their home country without having to pay exorbitant quarantine fees enforced by the government. The government's expectations of Aussie’s simply wanting to return home are out of touch and apathetic.

Many Australians living abroad, who already feel the affects of the pandemic, find themselves under significant financial pressure on their journey home. This is in addition to the stress of packing up their international lives which entails uprooting their families, pausing or severing their careers then paying heavily inflated fees for empty, capped flights that are often rescheduled or cancelled within a moment’s notice as well as passing a negative covid test within 72 hours of departure which is yet another out of pocket expense.

Expats understand and support the importance of the duty asked of them when arriving back into Australia and are compliant with 14 day quarantine and health check criteria even those who are already completely vaccinated upon their return.

What is difficult to comprehend is not only the cost of quarantine hotels but also the differing standards of these facilities between states. Some Australian's are given 5 star accomodation while others are given the bare minimum, yet everyone is expected to pay the same.

It also appears, largely through misinformation and fear mongering via the media, many Australians who were fortunate enough to be residing in Australia at the start of the pandemic are under the assumption expats have been on some sort of extended holiday or have been frivolous with their time during the pandemic, but this is simply not the case. Many expats have wanted to return home however the numerous challenges and circumstances they are faced with have stopped them from doing so.

Permitting we pass the health criteria, returning Australians have the right to live in their home country without having to cop extortionate fees just because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time. Other countries, like New Zealand, are allowing their citizens to waive the fee if they were overseas at the start of pandemic and are returning home with plans to stay. Australians should be offered the same consideration and kindness. Those that have already suffered the quarantine fees should be reimbursed or compensated in some way.

We ask that the government and the Australian people give all Australians 'a fair go', a value we have long preached with pride. This is clearly stated on the Australian Department of Home Affairs' webpage: "a 'fair go' for all embraces: mutual respect, tolerance, compassion for those in need and equality for all". 'You had your chance' is an insulting and close minded argument for any Aussie forced to suffer a debt to live in their home country.
