As a speech pathologist, I see school-aged children who have missed early developmental foundations, and who experience academic, behavioural, social and mental health challenges throughout their schooling as a result. The importance of supporting children and families with language and pre-literacy foundations in their preschool years cannot be understated.

As a speech therapist and audiologist, I am horrified at these facts. Every child should be supported to develop their speech, language and literacy before school.

Literacy is essential to individual and collective wellbeing. The demand for fully funded Early Childhood Education corresponds with the need to campaign for an early literacy strategy.

Literacy is a better determinant of a person's long-term wellbeing than obesity and smoking.
