ABC to support Yassmin Abdel-Magied after showing great restraint in discussion on Q&A

I find it disturbing that Change.org has launched a petition asking the ABC to fire Yassmin Abdul-Magied when she challenged Jacqui Lambie on Q&A about comments that clearly showed her total ignorance of Sharia Law. I think that Yassmin employed great restraint in attempting to challenge that ignorance and I believe that allowing people like Jacqui Lambie to whip up a fear campaign in Australia by attempting to identify Sharia Law with terrorism will only create hatred and distrust where none should exist.
Shariah is comprised of five main branches: adab (behavior, morals and manners), ibadah (ritual worship), i’tiqadat (beliefs), mu’amalat (transactions and contracts) and ‘uqubat (punishments). These branches combine to create a society based on justice, pluralism and equity for every member of that society. Furthermore, Shariah forbids that it be imposed on any unwilling person. Islam’s founder, Prophet Muhammad, demonstrated that Shariah may only be applied if people willingly apply it to themselves—never through forced government implementation.
The Qur’an clearly says, “There is no compulsion in religion” (2:257). Furthermore, Shariah obliges Muslims to be loyal to their nation of residence. Therefore, American Muslims must adhere to the US Constitution as the supreme law of the land and Australian Muslims adhere to Australian law.
Shariah is a personal relationship between a Muslim and God. In the U.S. the First Amendment forbids Congress from passing laws that restrict the free exercise of religion—particularly private exercise. If Shariah was banned, then Muslims could not marry, inherit, write wills or choose to divorce per Islam’s guidelines. If similar restrictions were imposed for other faith groups, then no Minister could conduct a marriage ceremony, no Catholic Bishop could read the last rites and no Rabbi could perform circumcision on an infant male Jewish child—because these are all Judeo-Christian religious laws. Even within our current legal system, Jews regularly resolve civil matters through rabbinical courts known as beit din. Muslims simply want to enjoy their same constitutionally guaranteed right.
What might surprise most Australians is that most Muslims live according to Sharia everyday of their lives. They live harmoniously. They’re not living in defiance of the Australian law. They're not seeking to set up a parallel legal system.
