On July 26th this year, Austin citizen Larry Jackson was fatally shot by Detective Charles Kleinert of the Austin Police Department. Jackson had committed no crime and was unarmed when he decided to flee from Kleinert. Kleinart then pursued him, at one time commandeering another person's car, and then continuing on foot. Kleinert then shot Jackson in the back of the neck and he died shortly after.
Kleinert has claimed that the shooting was accidental, a claim that the APD has repeated. But hotly pursuing an unarmed citizen and killing him is hardly accidental. The motorist whose car Kleinert seized, described the officer as "out of control" and said when they caught up with Jacskon he was simply walking on the sidewalk. This is only the latest in series of police shootings of unarmed civilians, and to date, no officer has been fired in any of these cases. It is time that APD's officers are held accountable for these murders. We, the undersigned, demand that the immediate termination of Charles Kleinert!
