Longview Park: Designate Off-Leash Area

Longview Neighborhood Park is enjoyed by the surrounding communities for many reasons like it's nature trails, playscapes and multi-use fields.
For years, the park has been used as a daily gathering place for dog owners. Numerous families and individuals play fetch with their animals and exercise while meeting and socializing with other members of surrounding neighborhoods. This has built a stronger community as citizens develop "first-name-basis" relationships in a uniquely interactive environment for this area of South Austin. This close-knit community enjoys the park with even more reverence and responsibility.
Until recently, posted signage seemed to declare a specific portion of the park as "on-leash" with an absence of signage near the large open field used for dog play and community interaction. Within the past few weeks a 7-8 foot pictographic sign was erected including the words "All Pets on Leash"
This petition to the City of Austin Parks and Recreation Department is a request to preserve this community activity and officially recognize the Northern section of Longview Park as an off leash area. Created organically and in reaction to the needs of a community, the regular interaction of citizens and neighbors is too valuable to not be preserved along with one of the most frequent utilizations of this designated park land.
