Sydney Johnson started this petition to Austin Department of Transportation

Every year, about 719 people across the country will die in right on red accidents (1). Additionally, areas that allow right on red turns have seen a 60% increase in pedestrian accidents, as well as a 100% increase in bicyclist accidents (2).

Austin is a city that permits right on red turns. So, we are unintentionally part of the problem...what can we do to be a part of the solution?

Well, we can start simple. By adding flashing signs above traffic lights in dangerous crossing areas for pedestrians, we could create big change just by creating more awareness. The signs would say: “YIELD to pedestrians before right on red,” and flash red lights in order to help drivers stay more aware. This will help people  to remember that pedestrians still have the right of way in the sidewalk, and that we as drivers need to be careful to make sure we do not hurt anyone while on the road.
By signing this, you will be a part of a big change and help save lives! Thank you so much for your support on this cause.
