We produce 300 million tons of plastic each year yet 91% of this does not get recycled instead of ending up in landfills or polluting our environment.

Instead of investing in quality goods that will last, we often prioritize convenience over durability and consideration of long-term impacts.

This deeply affects our marine life as it's estimated between 4.8 and 12.7 million metric tons enter our ocean so every year. This is critical for our dying marine life; a recent study showed plastic in 90% of the tested seagulls and 100% of the turtles. I've read 1 million marine animals die every year due to plastic debris, including turtles, fish, sharks, and birds.

Plastic does not just affect our animals but us as well. Plastic never really breaks down, it just breaks up into small fragments called microplastics. These microplastics end up in our environment, ingested by animals and inside us. Exposure to microplastics, as well as the chemicals that are added to plastics is harmful to our health.

Plastic also has bad impacts on the climate. A recent report showed that plastic production contributes to planet-warming greenhouse gas emissions at every point in its life cycle.

We need to save our animals, save ourselves, and save our earth.  By banning single-use plastic in New Zealand we are one step closer to achieving this.

Banning single-use plastic would prevent millions of tons of plastic from entering the waste stream each year. And when it comes to waste that lasts forever, every ton counts. Not only does banning single-use plastic reduce pollution, but it also reduces demand for plastic production that’s contributing to global climate change.

Banning single-use plastic also has effects on society. Companies will be forced to innovate, rethink their designs, and sourcing sustainable materials. They shift consumers' mindsets as people realize all this unnecessary waste is hurting our environment.

I care about making this world one that we are proud to call our own and to know we made a difference for the better. That we were not just another generation that let our earth be destroyed.

As John F Kennedy said "If not me, who? If not now, when?"
