John Read started this petition to Auckland City Council

We need to bring back the life in the sea in the Hauraki Gulf , which has been exploited for many years with no respite.

the best way to do this has already been proved with the success of existing marine reserves like the Poor Knights Islands and Goat Island. Which have shown how nature can bounce back if given the chance.

I am a keen fisherman, boatie and Scuba Diver and have lived in Auckland for 25 years and have seen the damage we are doing to the Marine environment in the Hauraki Gulf. The time has come for us to step up and do something real to protect our amazing region before it’s too late.

I propose we establish a new Marine Reserve protected area around the Island’s of the inner Gulf at The Noises,  David Rocks and Rakino Island as a start. This leaves plenty of room for people to continue fishing, but will create a refuge for our existing fish and other species to rebuild.

I urge you to support this initiative and to press all all those in power to make this happen.

Thank you for your support.
