We the citizens of Singapore, pledge ourselves as one United nation, regardless of race , language or religion, to build a democratic society, based on JUSTICE and equality...
Cases like these are the very reason I never wanted to study local if possible. Sure, sexual harassment/assault cases happen all over the world. But at least I can hope that adequate justice is served. In Singapore, I would have to live with the fact that the perpetrator would probably be able to walk away with his degree intact and a normal (successful even) life ahead, thinking that degree=get out of jail. I don't care that he has a "bright future". A piece of paper doesn't prove that you're a good person. Maybe he does have a chance at reformation, but keep him away from the general population while he's in rehab. Then we'll talk. Until then, I'll keep one eye on the look out when I'm out and about.
An offence is an offence. The offender has to pay for the crime he/ she commited regardless of how educated he/ she is. In fact, the MORE educated he/ she is, the MORE he/ she OUGHT to be prosecuted!
Someone's educational background has NO RELEVANCE to a crime. Crimes need to be subjected to the same punishment regardless of educational background. We need to inflict stronger sentences for serial crimes. The current sentences are a joke and an insult to a country who prides ourselves on the credibility of our justice system!
