Texas election maps are Exhibit A in why Preclearance status should be reinstated.
Texas election maps are Exhibit A in why Preclearance status should be reinstated.

The state of Texas has been found for decades to intentionally create maps with the intent of racial discrimination. In 2013 SCOTUS gutted the preclearance section of the Voting Rights Act, arguing that it did not speak accurately of current conditions.
The state of Texas with fresh data from the U.S. Census in 2020 knows that the population of Anglo voters and Hispanic voters is virtually equal. 95 % of the growth in Texas from the last decade is from communities of color.
The current maps for the State House of Representatives for Texas completely ignores this information. In the current House map proposal there are 89 majority Anglo districts and only 30 Majority Hispanic districts. Given the almost equal proportions of population in the state of Texas, this could not happen by accident. These maps were designed to reduce the the ability of minority groups to elect the Representatives of their choice.
The state of Texas needs to be sued by the Justice Department as soon as legally possible to stop these maps from disenfranchising Texas voters. Voters should be able to pick their Representatives, not the sitting Representatives picking their voters.
