Avanza Together started this petition to Attorney General

The only immigration court in the state of Ohio is located in Cleveland. To make hearings more accessible for immigrants across the state, we are proposing that immigrants that live more than 40 miles away from Cleveland Immigration Court be able to attend their hearings through videoconference.

*Why does this make sense?*

-Transportation is a barrier many undocumented immigrants face to be able to attend their hearings. Without a drivers license or reliable transportation, it is a hurdle that is difficult to overcome for many.

-It would cut costs on legal fees for many immigrants since immigration lawyers that are not based in Cleveland and charge per hour would not have to drive to Cleveland to represent their client.

-The technology is already there. During the COVID-19 pandemic video conference technology was used for hearings and before that video conference technology has been used repeatedly for clients that are detained in immigration court.

We propose for Ohio to become a "pilot program" to test if this initiative could significantly boost court appearances. We know many non profit sites would be happy to host satellite offices where immigrants can attend their video conference hearings.

Together, let's make immigration justice more accessible!
