The dangerous intersection between Glen Cove road and High Farms Road has been the site of countless car accidents for several years. In fact, in just the last 30 days there have been 3 major accidents. There are stop lights a quarter mile south of the intersection going and shortly after the intersection where the road forks, yet the High Farms intersection gets a ineffective Stop Sign.

The entrance to High Farms Road is a sharp turn causing the view for those exiting High Farms Rd to be particularly narrow. This means drivers that have stopped at the Stop Sign are forced to carefully inch up while cars drive by at high speeds. Once a driver sees an opportunity to cross to make a left they’re presented with their next issue: which side of the intersection should the driver stop at?

Traditional driving rules would encourage a driver to go towards the right side of the intersection while they wait for their opportunity to merge on to Glen Cove Road since that would allow them a clear view of oncoming traffic. However doing this causes issues for any drivers going north on Glen Cove Road hoping to make a U-Turn or turn left on to High Farms Road.

Alternatively, drivers can try for the left side of the intersection, but there are clear problems with this decision too. Firstly, if there’s a car waiting to turn left on to High Farms, going to the left of the intersection could lead to colliding with this car if the two drivers are unable to somehow coordinate their movements. Keep in mind while this coordination is going on, the drivers must be on the look out for oncoming traffic moving at 50+ MPH. Bringing me to the second major issue of going to the left of the intersection, the view of oncoming traffic.

If a driver is on the left side of the intersection hoping to turn left and travel north on to Glen Cove Road there view can easily be obstructed by a couple things. If more than one car are trying to make that left turn the middle area of the intersection gets crowded and your view of oncoming traffic is obstructed. Furthermore, if a car traveling north wants to turn left on to High Farms Road or make U-Turn to travel South, they’re view of oncoming traffic will be obstructed as will the driver trying to make a left. I understand these descriptions may be hard to imagine so I’ve provided drawings of the intersection to better explain.

It is because of all of this confusion that accidents so chronically riddle this intersection - confusion that could easily be resolved with traffic lights. We have allowed too many accidents to happen at this intersection without change. The time for traffic light implementation was years ago, but it’s better late than never. Please join me in asking Glen Cove to remedy this dangerous intersection so nobody else has to get hurt or worse, lose somebody they love from a deadly car accident.
