Attacchi a San Carlo Acutis. «Verificare idoneità dottrinale di Andrea Grillo»

1193

Come afferma San Giovanni Paolo II in Donum Veritatis:

Qualora, al termine dell’istruttoria, risultasse che le posizioni e il comportamento del prof. Grillo non siano compatibili con: l’integrità di dottrina richiesta dall’Art. 18 §1; la piena comunione col Magistero autentico della Chiesa richiesta dall’Art. 20 §3;

EN: The lay faithful, clerics, religious and students, who are deeply attached to the ecclesial and academic mission of the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo, wish to submit to the attention of the Dicastery for Culture and Education a formal request for intervention concerning the academic position of Prof. Andrea Grillo, a lecturer at the same Athenaeum.

This petition arises from an ecclesial concern: that of guaranteeing to the faithful, to the students and to the monastic communities that support the Athenaeum a formation that is truly “in conformity with the doctrine of the Church”, as expressly required by the Statutes.

Premise

The General Statutes recall that the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo is erected by Apostolic Authority and placed at the service of the universal Church and the magisterium of the Roman Pontiff.
Among its principal aims, the Athenaeum is committed to ensuring for students an integral formation that is “genuinely scientific and in conformity with the doctrine of the Church”.

The Statutes further establish that: All professors must be distinguished by “uprightness of life, integrity of doctrine and dedication to duty” and that, when one of these requirements is lacking, “they must be removed from their office”, in accordance with cann. 810 §1 and 818 CIC.

Professors of disciplines pertaining to faith or morals, once they have made the profession of faith and the oath of fidelity, receive the canonical mission from the Grand Chancellor and are aware that their task must be carried out “in full communion with the authentic Magisterium of the Church and in particular of the Roman Pontiff”.

It is the responsibility of the Grand Chancellor “to safeguard the doctrine and discipline of the Church and to receive the profession of faith and the oath of fidelity of the Rector and of the permanent Professors” and, if necessary, “to relieve them of the duty of teaching for a grave cause”.

These principles, which take up the Code of Canon Law and the Magisterium (Donum Veritatis, Veritatis gaudium), define a clear framework: academic freedom is real, but it is within the faith of the Church and cannot be separated from communion with the Magisterium.

Conduct and public positions of Prof. Andrea Grillo
In recent years, Prof. Andrea Grillo has distinguished himself, on social networks, in conferences and in various published texts (articles and books), by:

attacks against magisterial acts such as Summorum Pontificum, in violent tones, and public support for the ordination of women to the diaconate and beyond, presented not as a hypothesis for study to be submitted to ecclesial discernment, but as an objective to be pursued in opposition to the current discipline of the Church.

In the judgement of the signatories, such positions appear to be in contrast with the constant teaching concerning the reservation of the sacrament of Holy Orders to men, and with the way in which the Magisterium has so far addressed the question of ordained ministries for women, thereby fostering confusion among the faithful and students.
Systematic attacks on the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith and on its documents (for example Gestis verbisque, Fiducia supplicans, Dignitas infinita), often expressed in a polemical way, with denigratory tones towards those responsible in the office.

Writings and interventions that are strongly polemical against the person and Eucharistic spirituality of Saint Carlo Acutis, in which – according to the documentation – sarcastic and contemptuous expressions are used not only with regard to the young saint, but also to the Eucharistic devotion of the People of God, presented as “obsessive” or “ill-mannered”, with judgements that seem to devalue the doctrine on the Real Presence and on Eucharistic miracles.

A constantly aggressive and denigratory language towards those who defend the current discipline of the Church (for example on the impossibility of conferring Holy Orders on women), with generalisations that go so far as to brand as “psychiatric” entire groups of faithful who simply adhere to the Magisterium in force.

A systematic delegitimisation of those who do not share his positions, often in ways which, rather than fostering theological discussion, aim at ridiculing the interlocutor, to the point of attacking a saint of the Church and millions of faithful devoted to the Eucharist and in particular those who are attached to the Vetus Ordo.

The signatories recognise that the theologian, by his very nature, can and must ask questions, explore and argue, even in areas that are the object of theological discussion. However, in the case of Prof. Grillo, it is considered that:
the content of some of his theses,
the way in which they are put forward (as a systematic opposition to current doctrine),
and the constantly contemptuous tone towards the sensus fidei of the People of God,
are incompatible with the “integrity of doctrine” required of professors and with the obligation to exercise theological freedom within the faith of the Church and in full communion with the Magisterium.

Faithfulness to the universal Magisterium

As Saint John Paul II states in Donum Veritatis:
“The faithful have the right to receive the word of God in its entirety and purity. The task of theology is to serve this right, helping the People of God to understand the faith ever more deeply” (no. 7).
“Public dissent from the teaching of the Magisterium cannot be considered a legitimate expression of theological freedom” (no. 32).
When the teaching of a theologian, especially in a pontifical institution, takes the form of a public, systematic and polemical contestation of the positions of the Magisterium and of contempt for the sensus fidei of simple faithful, a fracture is created with the very mission of the ecclesiastical institute that hosts him.

Relevant statutory norms

In the light of the foregoing, the signatories consider that, in the case of Prof. Andrea Grillo, the following provisions of the General Statutes of the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo may be relevant:
Art. 3 §1 – Purpose of the Athenaeum: to ensure a formation “genuinely scientific and in conformity with the doctrine of the Church”.
Art. 5 §§1 and 3 – Duties of the Grand Chancellor: “To safeguard the doctrine and discipline of the Church and to receive the profession of faith and the oath of fidelity of the Rector and of the permanent Professors”; “to appoint the permanent Professors and to relieve them of the duty of teaching for a grave cause”.

Art. 18 §§1-3 – When professors cease from office: “All Professors [...] must be distinguished by uprightness of life, integrity of doctrine and dedication to duty [...] When one of these requirements is lacking, the Professors [...] must be removed from their office (cann. 810 §1 and 818 CIC)”; the Grand Chancellor may relieve permanent professors from teaching for a grave cause, after a procedure that guarantees the professor’s right of defence.

Art. 20 §§1-3 – Rights and duties of professors: freedom in research and teaching must be exercised within the faith of the Church; professors of disciplines pertaining to faith or morals, after the profession of faith and the oath of fidelity, receive the canonical mission and are obliged to carry out their task “in full communion with the authentic Magisterium of the Church”.

In the light of these norms, the signatories consider that the whole set of the positions taken by Prof. Grillo (on the ordination of women, on Eucharistic doctrine, on the figure of Saint Carlo Acutis, on the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, as well as the public tone he uses) raises serious doubts about the continuing presence of the “integrity of doctrine” and of the full communion with the Magisterium required for the exercise of teaching in an ecclesiastical faculty.

Requests

In virtue of what has been set out above, the undersigned request that:
the Grand Chancellor and the Rector order a formal verification of the doctrinal suitability of Prof. Andrea Grillo, in the light of his writings and public interventions, in particular on: the ordination of women and ordained ministries; Eucharistic doctrine and popular devotion; his relationship with the Magisterium and with the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith.

Such verification should take place by means of the instruments provided for by the Statutes and by canon law, including – if necessary – the appointment of a Commission to examine in a systematic way the writings and public statements of Prof. Grillo, while at the same time guaranteeing his right to present clarifications and defences.

Should it emerge, at the conclusion of the investigation, that the positions and conduct of Prof. Grillo are not compatible with: the integrity of doctrine required by Art. 18 §1; the full communion with the authentic Magisterium of the Church required by Art. 20 §3; that his removal from the office of professor at the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo be carried out, in accordance with the law, in application of cann. 810 §1 and 818 CIC and of the Statutes of the Athenaeum.

That appropriate information be given to the academic community and to the faithful regarding the outcome of the procedure, with respect for persons but also in respect of the right of the faithful to sound doctrine and to the assurance that ecclesial institutions do not finance the systematic calling into question of the Magisterium.

With this petition, the signatories intend to ask that academic and theological responsibilities be exercised in full consistency with the ecclesial nature of the Pontifical Athenaeum of Sant’Anselmo and with the rights of the faithful.

As Pope Francis has recalled, “we are not masters of the faith, but servants of the Word”. If a professor, by virtue of his chair, undermines the trust of the faithful in the doctrine of the Church and despises the sensus fidei of the People of God, it is for the competent authorities to intervene, in order to safeguard communion and truth together.
