The SUNY System is the largest University system in the country. It was created to provide opportunities, give access, and push for more diversity in all educational aspects across the state. However, SUNY at Fredonia thrives on the idea of diversity yet it doesn’t meet the full potential of diversity standards. What has been brought to a concern, is the lack of effort from our peers and faculty of the athletic department. The athletic department has yet to bring a more welcoming atmosphere to students of color, which it hasn’t provided an easier access to participating in sports. As a student of color, I wasn’t able to try out for any sports that I liked due to the lack of announcement and also coaches just relying on recruitment. As a student who pays their tuition well on time,  I would think that going to a D3 school, the options of being part of a sport would be easier. However, I was never given the chance at all, and so have many other students of color in Fredonia. Which is why, this petition is needed. We want to see more open and fair tryouts, and more and fair recruitments towards students of color.
