As an alumni and a mother with children in this school district, I feel that the name change is a waste of tax payer’s money and in general, a waste of time. The Atchison Redmen and The Atchison Braves are part of our history. Why change history? Every time the town tries to change a part of our history, it costs us tax payer’s more money. Plus, it takes another piece of history away. If we keep taking history away, there will not be any here left. Then our children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and so forth will not be able to see any of it nor get to learn about any of it! There hasn’t been anything wrong with our school’s names in the past years and now there is something wrong with them? I find it kind of funny how it wasn’t a “one person” who brought this issue up, but not only a community action organization called Atchison United. So, this was an “organization” who just had to bring this issue up again, instead of “a person” with concerns. After we have already visited this issue 3 years ago and it was rejected. It should stay rejected, as most of us do not think of these mascots to be racial in any way. We find it a part of the history culture and in honor of our Natives. Natives used to own this land. So, I am a firm believer that these mascots are here to honor those who were ran off of these lands. A Landmark of what was once theirs! Not racism. If we change them now, it will only show the Natives that we no longer want their Mascot's or their Landmark kept here and that we are pushing them out once again. To me this is a form of racism! When I went to school here and people after me and before me, I have never heard of anybody saying the racial remark of "Redskins." Why would we even do such a thing! If you agree with me, please help me save our Mascot’s...... Help me keep/save our Native's Landmark's!
